Mohammad Rafi is undoubtedly among one of the most famous singers in the Hindi playback singing industry. He was born on 24 Dec 1924 in Kotla Sultan a village in Amritsar Punjab. His singing talent was recognized by his elder brother’s friend Abdul Hameed. He took his elementary classical music lessons from Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo. He started his singing career back in 1944 has sung more than 7,400 songs till his death in Jul 1980 Rafi has sung across all genres be it sad songs, romantic numbers, ghazals, bhajans, patriotic tracks or classical renditions. He was a truly multilingual artist singing in Bhojpuri, Odia, Punjabi, Sindhi, Telugu, Kannada, Urdu, Gujarati, English, Dutch and Arabic Mohammad Rafi worked with the top artists of his times. However his work with OP Nayyar and Shankar Jaikishan as music directors is considered the most noteworthy. He won three Filmfare awards working with the legendary duo, out of his total 6 such awards. He also worked on very successful tracks with Laxmikant Pyarelal starting with the movie Parasmani in 1963. He also worked with father and son SD Burman and RD Burman in very famous tracks like O Haseena Zulfon wali, O mere Sona Re Sona, Chadti Jawani and Maine Poocha Chand Se. Rafi also worked with other legends like Naushad, Madan Mohan and Ravi Some of the most popular tracks that he sang are: Chaudahavi Ka Chand Ho, Mere Mehboob Tujhe, Ye Reshmi Zulfain, Chahunga Main Tujhe, Baharo Phool Barsao, Dil Ke Jharokhe Main, Teri Bindiya Re, Ye Duniya Ye Mehfil, Badi Mastani Hai, Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho, Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par, Main Gaoon Tum So Jao, Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya, Khilona Jaan Kar, Chhoo Lene De Nazuk Hothon Ko, Chalo Re Doli Uthao Kahar, Maine Poochha Chaand Se, Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe, Teri Galiyon Main Na Rakhenge Kadam and Mere Dost Kissa Ye Kya Ho Gaya In 1967 he was awarded Padma Sri by the Government of India in recognition of his stellar achievements in music. He in total won 6 Filmfare awards and one national film award for the song Kya Hua Tera Wada from the movie Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin There have been demands to award him, posthumously, the highest civilian award from the Government of India – Bharat Ratna. Nevertheless, Mohammad Rafi and his voice would continue to rule over the hearts and minds of his fans spread all across the world.
